The OT Circus is thrilled to present, for one night only, “Invisible Beauty” – a series of prolific works by Arlaina Ash. This show is Saturday evening June 30, from 5-9p. Light refreshments will be available for you to enjoy during this pop up art event!
Arlaina Ash is a self taught artist who does most of her creative work at community art studios.
She was inspired by a phrase she found years ago while perusing National Geographics for collage material: ‘Discover the invisible beauty… ‘ The words brought to mind philosophical questions like ‘what is beautiful?’ ‘How can it be possible not to see it if it’s there?’ Perhaps things that most people wouldn’t notice that she found on her walks and put in her pocket to use as art at a later date? Or something or someone that doesn’t at first seem beautiful until one looks deeper?
The piece of paper clipped carefully from the magazine is lost now after many life transitions, but the phrase is still in her subconscious. It describes the intuitive act of piecing together discarded papers and objects to create something new. Often she would arrive at the studio not sure what to do next, and find herself perusing shelves of old magazines, patterned paper, frames, small boxes, fabric, adding different colors of paint to her pallet, until she was inspired. From there items would piece themselves together.
Beginning as an outsider artist, she broadened her skills at the community college, discovering she could draw images of her own. Still she continued to pursue her unique vision. Her works reflect her whimsical and sometimes dark view of the world. She is especially drawn to the symbolism of rabbits, and they appear often in her work. As trickster, as guide, as a fertility symbol representing creativity. She hopes this collection inspires the viewer to see beauty in ways not always apparent to the naked eye.
