Lost & Found: New Work by Caitlin Padilla

* NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED. THIS IS A POP UP ART EVENT DURING FIRST FRIDAY ABQARTWALK*

The OT Circus and ABQArtwalk are thrilled to present the opening reception of "Lost & Found" on Friday October 2nd, 2020 from 5-8pm. This showing is located at our sister property, what will soon be the "Curious Toast" at 718 Central Ave SW.

Artist Statement in her own words:

"Lost & Found
Sometimes you’ve got to get lost to find yourself...
My art has evolved over my career, ever changing as I hone my craft, always pushing to be authentic and vulnerable.
I have worked hard to be where I am, personally and professionally.
There are a handful of moments and events in life that shake you to the core. One of these is learning your partner of twenty years has a rare bone cancer and needs half of his pelvis replaced, at 40. During a once in a hundred years pandemic.
My world came crashing down and we were lost in unknown waters, falling down a deep hole.
I had to shut down, go into survival mode. In a flash, it seemed everything I had worked so hard for, was gone.
I was frozen and unable to create for months, only focusing on my family, my broken life, and endless rabbit holes of apocalypse and the unknown.
Through struggles and faults, screaming and isolation, I fought. He fought. We fought.
I lost myself, my creativity, my passion.
As the world literally burned, I had to claw my way back to something tangible.
I cried as I started painting my husbands broken pelvis. Flinging paint and crying in full view of passers-by at my first market since February. It felt amazing.
I found a painting I had previously let sit, unfinished. It had been through a lot.
I lost it, It got run over by a car, and it made it’s way back to me.
In a moment of pure emotion I took a palette knife to it, and opened something inside me
I have had a hard time with expressing how all of this translated to my art
It is very personal and powerful.
This work reflects a shift in my soul and process. Once consumed with detail and ethereal connection on a macro and micro level, I find my vision blurred by rage and emotion.
Finding old and making it new, starting from scratch and letting go.
I have found a new voice and I am screaming."

Throughout history human skin has been a canvas for artists. The history of tattoos includes marking slaves and outcasts, punishment, a rite of passage into adulthood or special societies, and in our modern society, decoration.
In this series of, images Pat Barret has focused on the female back, a canvas shape that lends itself to many different configurations. Each of the tattoos in this project has special meaning for the owner.
Since Pat began the project in the late 1990’s he has photographed more than 60 women and their tattoos.
